While this provides quite a bit of light, it is also the reason that the torchiere lamp shade cannot be made of material. And, since torchieres halogen bulbs are exposed, if a bug is attracted to the light and goes near it, they often get fried and create smoke and a disgusting sizzling sound. Another downfall of torchieres is that they have been reported to cause a lot of fires from being left on for too long. If they get knocked over, they can definitely cause a fire, and because of this they are banned in some college dorms. However, if you are careful with your torchieres and you always turn it off before leaving or going to bed, they can be a great accent to any room.
