One of the first types of lamps ever to be used, aside from candles, was gas lamps. The light put off from these lamps can be altered to fit your needs, and they look traditionally antique. Whether you are using true antique gas light with lamp shade, or if you are buying a newly created gas lamp, you are sure to love the addition this lamp will make to your home.
Older generations are often big fans of gas lamps, as it helps them travel through time to days when they were younger. But, even if you are too young to have ever been required to use old gas table lamps for light, you can still enjoy the simplicity of this natural lighting source. Not only can gas lamps allow you to experience a nostalgia for days gone by, but they can come in very handy in bad weather as well. If your electricity has gone out and you need lighting, gas lamps are often an excellent solution. With covers to protect the area around gas lamps from the flame, unlike candles, they can be the safest way to provide light with no electricity. Another way that gas lamps are better than candles is that the light is adjustable, allowing you to use as much or little of the gas as you want and obtain as much or little light as you want.
If you have never used a gas lamp, and you aren’t sure how you’d light a gas lamp, think of traditional gas lanterns used for camping. You light gas lamps in a similar manner, but if you still aren’t sure, there will be directions included with the lamp that will explain how to light a gas lamp. Gas lamps are very primitive, using natural resources in a contained manner, so you could make a gas lamp on your own with the proper knowledge. Gas lamp light conversion kits are even available at some stores, and these will explain how to do this.
It is, however, very important to remember when using gas lamps that they are not the same as electric lamps. While the bulb of an electric lamp does get hot and poses a slight risk of injury, gas lamps can be much more dangerous. The shades on gas lamps are always glass, so breaking is always a concern. It is also a real flame so the risk of fire is increased more than with bulbs. The gas container is also something you will need to take proper precautions with, as gas is very flammable and dropping the container or allowing it to get too hot can be detrimental.
